A few words as to the origins of these records may help define their primary purpose.

In 1998, the editors of an international reference work requested for their entry on David Drew a reasonably comprehensive list of his published writings, editions, and musical arrangements. A formal bibliography was duly assembled from readily accessible sources. Apart from obvious gaps and anomalies, it missed the often essential connections with Drew's work in music publishing, in the recording industry, and in various curatorships. Until that context could be indicated, the bare facts of a bibliography were not only dry but combustible. For instance, the non-appearance of announced publications was at least as relevant as the hitherto unrecorded fact that several items had been published in unauthorised forms.

The present year-by-year account has been assembled with reference wherever possible to correspondence and to other primary sources. It is by its very nature subject to revision and updating. Except for the early years, it excludes all personal and family matters, and ignores musical or extra-musical interests beyond the relatively narrow fields in which the author has been professionally active.

Bold type is reserved for the names of key composers, musicians and individuals; bold italics for the titles of articles, essays, papers, and musical works; and BOLD ITALIC CAPS for titles of books, whether published or in preparation.
